Arbatax & the Gulf of Oresei

Arbatax was a strange little place with the friendliest of marina staff and a bunch of supposedly famous  “Red Rocks”.

After a walk around, a not so quick stop to the smallest but busiest supermarket ever, we headed on our way, and coastal hopped, literally round the head into the Gulf of Orosei. When I say coastal hopped, it was more like hugged, sailing less than 30 metres of the steep too incredibly dramatic cliffs, and rock faces in more than 30 metres of water.

I hope the pictures portray the magnificence of it all, the only disappointment was that between the unsettled weather and the huge no of tourist boats towing and froing around the coves, grottos and one of 2 possible mooring spots, we weren’t able to drop anchor for the night and headed into Cala Gonone, a cute frentic marina… we managed to squeeze in at 11.9 metres long (the max allowed was 12m), and moor her safely amidst the no of ribs & tourist boats flying around us.

Cala Gonone is a cheerful seaside town, the prominent thing on the market, evidenced by the no of little shacks along the main road, being boat tours to the coves and grottoes, only reachable by boat!

For those who are following in our foot steps.. this is one of the cheapest moorings around, at €28 per night, soaring to a record €38 in the high season!!!
